Greeting Master at the Door

When Master comes home, I take his shoes off for him and put away his things (coat, bag, etc.). Master was the one who initiated and came up with this protocol. I admit it took me a few days to get used to it. Even now, every once in a while, I have to remind myself to do it.

It’s easier to remember when he comes home on his own. The way our apartment is set up, the front door opens pretty much into the living room (which is where I spend most of my time). And I always want to hear about how he’s doing anyway, so it’s a nice transition for both of us.

When we come home together, however, it’s sometimes a bit harder to remember. When he first initiated this protocol and the first few times we came home together, I completely forgot. I took my own shoes off, said hello to the cats, and started to set up my laptop. Meanwhile, Master was just standing by the door, coat and shoes still on, waiting for me to notice. Of course eventually I did, but I remember wondering why he was just standing there by the door.

No punishments for forgetting new protocols, of course. Whenever introducing new protocols, Master and I make sure there’s a good “trial period” so we can both get used to it. If— after that “trial period”— I continue to forget the protocol, then we need to talk about why it’s not working and why it’s difficult to remember or difficult to get done. This has not happened yet, but it’s how we’ve decided to handle a forgotten or neglected protocol if it does.

But I’ve gotten quite used to this one. It’s become very natural for me— for both of us— now, and it’s a sweet little ritual we do multiple times a day.
